Status for: Gross and Net Primary Productivity (MOD17)

 
General Accuracy Statement

Stage 3 validation has been achieved for the gross and net primary production products. Our global annual estimates of GPP and NPP are within 10.4% and 9.0% of average published results, respectively.

There are two products required as inputs to the MOD17A2/A3 algorithm: GMAO meteorological data and MOD15A2 LAI/FPAR. The meteorological data, obtained from the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO), has improved several times, and now GEOS-5 is the version currently used. We use spatial, non-linear interpolation of the input GMAO meteorology to improve estimates of meteorology in any given pixel. Particular improvements are found in areas of significant elevation changes and along coastlines. Additional improvements to the MOD15A2 product with the release of Collection 5 further improved our results. Quality control was performed on the LAI (MOD15A2) products, and a simple linear temporal gap-filling technique was used to replace missing data. In addition, we have made improvements to the Biome Properties Lookup Table (BPLUT) in the MOD17A2/A3 algorithm. The parameters of the BPLUT were tuned, within a physiologically reasonable range, to match published estimates of GPP and NPP for each biome type. Finally, we added an annual GPP calculation to the MOD17A3 product and included a meaningful quality control estimate for annual values of GPP and NPP based on gap-filled MOD15A2 data.
